Catholics
A rich history and tradition
that goes back centuries
By Nicholas Mancino,
President, Regina Tours
I n late May 2014, His
Holiness Pope Francis made
a pilgrimage to Israel, the
Holy Land. Like generations
of popes before him, he
walked where Jesus walked,
of the Holy Land
prayed where Jesus prayed and
taught as Jesus taught. During
this pilgrimage, His Holiness
conferred with governmental
leaders and members of the
clergy. He met with Patriarch of
Constantinople Bartholomeus,
in the Upper Room, just as
Pope Paul VI met with Patriarch
Athenagoras in Jerusalem ifty
years earlier.
In the Church of Gethsemane, at
the foot of the Mount of Olives,
Pope Francis ofered a homily to
clergy, women and men of the
church, as well as seminarians
living, working and studying
in Israel. He said, "You, dear
brothers and sisters, are called
to follow the Lord with joy in this
holy land! It is a gift and also a
responsibility. Your presence here
is extremely important; the whole
Church is grateful to you and she
sustains you with her prayers."
Pope Francis continued, "From
this holy place, I wish to extend
Mark Wyble's group
carrying the cross on my heartfelt greetings to all
the Via Dolorsa Christians in Jerusalem."
